AI Airport Chatbots vs AI Digital Assistants: What's the Difference?

Created by Tiernan Mines

The terms "AI chatbot", "AI assistant", "virtual assistant" and "AI agent" are increasingly used interchangeably. For airports, however, there can be an important difference between deploying a basic airport chatbot and implementing an AI Digital Assistant designed around the passenger journey. So what is the difference?

‍

What is an airport chatbot?

‍

An airport chatbot is generally a simple conversational interface that allows passengers to ask questions and receive automated responses. A chatbot might answer questions such as:

‍

  • What time does the airport open?
  • Where is the car park?
  • What is the baggage allowance?
  • Where is the check-in area?
  • What facilities are available?

‍

Whilst they’re useful for automating repetitive customer service queries, a conversational chatbot remains essentially a digital version of an FAQ system.

‍

What is an AI Digital Assistant?

‍

An AI Digital Assistant is designed to provide a broader layer of passenger support. Rather than simply answering questions, it can connect passengers with information, services and operational systems across the airport.

‍

The Hello Airport approach is based on the idea of a Digital Team Member: an AI-powered member of the airport's wider team that provides support across the physical and digital passenger journey. This distinction matters.

‍

  • A Chatbot answers questions.
  • A Digital Assistant helps passengers navigate, understand, find, prepare and respond.
  • A Digital Team Member works alongside your people – supporting passengers, reducing workload and providing insight across the entire airport.

‍

‍

Location and context matter

‍

One of the biggest differences is context. Let’s take a few examples:

‍

A passenger who asks “Where is the toilet?” doesn’t necessarily want a generic answer. They want to know where the nearest toilet is from their current location.

‍

Similarly, "How do I get to my gate?" is fundamentally a navigation question. An effective airport AI assistant can use location-specific information to provide more relevant guidance.

‍

The Hello Airport model incorporates location-specific guidance covering terminal maps, navigation, gates, retail locations and passenger context.

‍

Integration makes AI more useful

‍

A standalone chatbot can only provide the information it has been given. A more sophisticated airport AI platform can integrate with existing systems and data.

‍

The Hello Airport guide identifies potential connections including live flight information, parking systems, assistance workflows and wider airport data infrastructure. This creates the potential for passengers to access a much wider range of information through one conversational interface.

‍

For example, a passenger could potentially ask about a flight, security queues, parking, transport connections or facilities without having to navigate several different airport systems.

‍

AI Digital Assistants support accessibility

‍

The difference is also important for assisted travel. Passengers don't always know what assistance is available, whether they qualify for particular services or how to request support. A Digital Team Member can provide a discreet channel for asking those questions.

‍

At Glasgow Airport, Hello Airport has helped support more than 4,000 passengers annually while contributing to a 50% reduction in PRM and customer service queries requiring manual intervention. The digital channel doesn't replace assisted travel teams. Instead, it helps passengers access information and support before they need human intervention.

‍

‍

The real difference is what sits behind the conversation

‍

The interface may look similar. A passenger types a question and receives an answer, but the underlying capability can be very different.

‍

An airport chatbot might be primarily an automated question-and-answer tool. A Digital Team Member can become an operational layer connecting passenger information, location, accessibility, disruption communication and airport services.

‍

That is why Hello Airport is positioned as a Digital Team Member rather than simply another AI chatbot or first generation AI Digital Assistant.

‍

The goal isn't to automate the human experience out of airports. It is to make airport teams more available to the people who need them most.

‍

Choosing the right airport AI technology

‍

When evaluating airport AI technology, airports should look beyond the conversation interface. Important considerations include:

‍

  • Integration with airport systems
  • Location-aware information
  • Real-time data
  • Accessibility and multilingual support
  • Ability to scale during disruption
  • Passenger analytics and insight
  • Proven staff-time savings
  • Support across physical and digital channels

‍

The right question is therefore not simply "Do we need an airport chatbot?" It should be, “How can AI become a useful digital team member within our passenger experience?”. That shift in thinking opens up a much broader opportunity for airport customer service, accessibility, wayfinding and operational resilience.

‍

A well-implemented Digital Team Member can become an important part of an airport’s approach to managing passenger flow and increasing engagement. By combining location awareness, real-time flight and operational information with conversation AI, passengers can access the information they need to keep moving, from finding the most appropriate route to their gate and checking security information, to understanding flight disruptions, discovering facilities and retail opportunities along the way.

‍

Providing passengers with immediate, self-service access reduces unnecessary queues at information desks and customer service points, helping airports manage demand and reduce pressure on frontline teams.

‍

At the same time, a Digital Team Member can act as a digital concierge, connecting passengers with relevant services, restaurants, shops and facilities based on their location and needs. The result is a technology layer that can help airports manage passenger movement more effectively while creating additional opportunities for passenger engagement and non-aeronautical revenue.
