These are the standards you can expect from the Environment Agency when we collect, hold or use your personal information when you use our Hello Lamp Post service.

We do this in line with data protection law, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act (DPA) 2018.

Which data we process

When you use the Environment Agency Hello Lamp Post service, we process:

  • Your mobile phone number (processed and stored, pseudonymised)
  • The location of the sign that you are engaging with (processed and stored)
  • Your Internet Protocol (IP) address (processed only, not stored)
  • Your opinions that you share with us (processed and stored)

We are lawfully allowed to process your personal data because you consent to us doing so. You have the right to withdraw this consent at any time by contacting us:

Why we process your data

We process your data to:

  • Share information with you about Environment Agency activities
  • Gather your opinions to inform Environment Agency activities
  • Provide you with an interactive experience using the Hello Lamp Post service

How long we retain data

When interacting with the service, the first reply you receive will request your consent. If you do not reply to that first message we will assume that your consent has not been provided and your data will be deleted in 1 week.

If you contact us to ask for your data to be deleted (your ‘right to erasure’ or ‘right to be forgotten’) we will delete your data within 1 month.

Your anonymised data and pseudonymised data is kept for the duration of the contract between Environment Agency and Hello Lamp Post.

Keeping your data secure

We have procedures and security features in place to keep your data secure once we receive it. It is stored on secure servers in the UK.

Any data you send is at your own risk

Sending information over the internet is generally not completely secure, and we can’t guarantee the security of your data while it’s in transit.

Your rights

You have rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), including the right to access your data and the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Due to data protection regulations this service is aimed at adults. If you are a young person and would like to be involved, speak to a parent or guardian to share your thoughts on the information in the interaction.
